The city gets its name from the Malayalam word thiru-anantha-puram meaning the “City of Lord Anantha”. The name is derived from the deity of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple at the center of the city. This temple of Lord Vishnu reclining on Anantha (Serpant) remains the iconic landmark of the city. It is estimated that the value of the wealth and assets of the temple, though only partially revealed, is close to Rs.1000 billion (US$16 billion), making it the richest temple in the world.
